Welcome to ╥Multimedia Dogs 2.0: The Complete Interactive Guide to Dogs.╙ This README file provides you with the basics needed to get started on Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers.
1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Your Macintosh or Power Macintosh computer should have the following minimum system configuration:
256 (8-bit) color Macintosh (68040 CPU recommended)
4 MB of free memory (5 MB or more recommended)
13-inch color monitor (640x480 pixels)
QuickTime¬ 2.0 or higher (included on CD-ROM)
CD-ROM drive (double-speed recommended)
System 7 or higher recommended
2. INSTALLATION
All files related to installation are in the ╥Install╙ folder on the CD. The files are:
QuickTime
QuickTime Musical Instruments
QuickTIme PowerPlug (only required for Power Macintosh computers)
Apple Multimedia Tuner
Sound Manager
The steps for installation are:
(1) Drag older versions of these files to the Trash. The older versions will be in your System Folder (System 6) or your Extensions folder inside the System Folder (System 7).
(2) Drag all of the above files onto your System Folder. Under System 7, the Finder will put these into their correct locations in the Extensions folder.
For improved performance, copy the Multimedia Dogs 2.0 application to your hard drive and increase its preferred memory allocation by choosing ╥Get Info...╙ from the Finder╒s ╥File╙ menu. You can then run the application from your hard drive.
3. GETTING STARTED
To start the application, double-click on the ╥Multimedia Dogs 2.0╙ icon.
At the bottom of the screen is the Bonigator¬ , the large dog bone that appears at the bottom of the screen. There are 8 buttons on the Bonigator:
Dogs: explore over 180 dog breeds.
Groups: learn about how dogs are organized into groups.
Fetch: find the dog that's right for you.
Fun: games, slide show, wacky movies, and other surprises.
Topics: learn about health care, training, grooming, and other dog-related topics.
World: learn about the geographic origins of dogs.
Help: get online help about the program.
Quit: quit the applciation (or type command-Q)
Explore the disc by single-clicking (double-clicking is not necessary) on objects, text, and anything else you'd like to try. You can't hurt anything, so click on everything and anything. Yellow text is "hot"╤if you click on yellow text, it will show you related information.
4. GETTING HELP
If you need Help, just push the Help button. Help is "context-sensitive" -- whenever you enter the Help area, you'll be viewing help that pertains to the last area that you were in.
5. TROUBLESHOOTING
This section addresses memory-related problems. If you are having problems getting Multimedia Dogs 2.0 to run, or if video/sound are not operating properly, then try the following fixes.
(a) Turn off stuff you aren't using.
Free up as much memory (RAM) as possible by quitting all other active applications, disabling unnecessary Extensions and Control Panels, disabling Appletalk in the Chooser, and/or reducing the Disk Cache in the Memory control panel. In the extreme case, you may want to disable everything except QuickTime and your CD-ROM software. (You must restart after making changes.) If ╥About This Macintosh╔╙ (available under the Apple menu) reports over 4700K as the ╥Largest Unused Block,╙ the problem should disappear when you run the application.
(b) Turn on Virtual Memory.
Open the Memory control panel and turn on Virtual Memory. Give yourself enough virtual memory so that you will have enough free memory to run Multimedia Dogs 2.0. Multimedia Dogs 2.0 typically requires 4096K of free memory. If you are running a Power Macintosh with Virtual Memory turned off, Multimedia Dogs 2.0 requires 4700K of free memory.
(c) Buy more RAM
If you can't manage to free up enough memory using the above procedures, then it's probably time to buy some more RAM. Not only will Multimedia Dogs 2.0 run better, but you will see an improvement in your other applications as well.
